FLETC in Brunswick, GA: A Local's Guide to Glynco

If you've landed in Brunswick because of three letters — FLETC — you're in good company. The Federal Law Enforcement Training Center is one of the biggest reasons people from all over the country find themselves on Georgia's coast, whether they're reporting for training, visiting someone who is, or moving here to work. This is the local-neighbor version: what FLETC actually is, who trains there, and how to make the most of Brunswick and the Golden Isles while you're here.

What is FLETC?

The Federal Law Enforcement Training Center — almost always just called FLETC (say it like flet-see) — is the federal government's main training organization for law enforcement. It's a component of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and it trains personnel for dozens of federal agencies in one place rather than each agency running its own academy. Locally, you'll hear FLETC, the Center, and Glynco used interchangeably — they all mean the same campus.

The headquarters and main campus sit at Glynco, on the northwestern edge of Brunswick in Glynn County. It's a sprawling site — a former World War II naval air station — that's effectively a small town of its own, with classrooms, dormitories, dining facilities, firearms ranges, and driver-training tracks.

Where is FLETC?

FLETC Glynco is just north of Brunswick, Georgia, almost exactly halfway down the coast between Savannah, GA and Jacksonville, FL. The campus is right off Interstate 95 at Exit 38, and the Brunswick Golden Isles Airport (BQK) sits practically next door — only a couple of miles away. More on getting here in our reporting-to-FLETC guide.

That location is the quiet superpower of training at Glynco: you're minutes from I-95, minutes from a regional airport, and a short drive from some of Georgia's best beaches and barrier islands. Few federal training assignments come with St. Simons Island, Jekyll Island, and Driftwood Beach in the backyard.

Who trains at FLETC?

FLETC is an interagency academy — it serves as the shared training home for dozens of federal agencies, plus support for state, local, tribal, and international law enforcement. A few of the better-known programs based at or hosted by Glynco include the ICE Academy (Homeland Security Investigations special agents and Enforcement and Removal Operations officers) and U.S. Marshals Service basic deputy training. We break this down in the agencies & programs guide.

A little history: the blimp base

Here's a piece of trivia locals love: the Glynco site was originally a U.S. Navy air station built in 1942, home to a fleet of blimps (airships) that patrolled the southern Atlantic coast hunting German submarines during World War II. When the Navy left, the property became FLETC's home in the mid-1970s.
