Agencies & Programs at FLETC: Who Trains in Glynco?
One of the most common questions about FLETC is simply: who actually trains there? The short answer is — a lot of the federal government. Here's a plain-English overview.
An interagency academy
What makes FLETC unusual is right in its mission: it's an interagency training organization. Instead of every federal law-enforcement component running a separate academy, FLETC trains personnel for dozens of agencies in shared facilities, and also provides training to state, local, tribal, and international law enforcement. That's why Glynco is so large and so busy — recruits from many different agencies train side by side.
Some of the academies and programs based here
- ICE Academy — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement runs basic training at Glynco for both Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) special agents and Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) officers, in a dedicated academy complex on the campus.
- U.S. Marshals Service — new Deputy U.S. Marshals complete their basic training (a multi-week integrated program) at Glynco, taught jointly by FLETC and USMS instructors.
- Many more — a broad mix of DHS and other federal components send recruits to Glynco for basic criminal-investigator and law-enforcement training, plus specialized and advanced courses.
What the training looks like (in general)
Specifics vary by agency and program, but federal basic training at FLETC commonly covers criminal and constitutional law, firearms, driver training, physical techniques and fitness, investigations and report writing, and ethics — the shared foundation almost every federal officer or agent needs. Agencies then layer their own specialized training on top.
FLETC's other sites
Glynco is the headquarters and largest campus, but FLETC isn't only in Georgia. It also operates residential training sites in Artesia, New Mexico and Charleston, South Carolina, and a non-residential facility in Cheltenham, Maryland serving the Washington, D.C. area, plus international training roles abroad. If you searched FLETC and landed somewhere other than Brunswick, that's why.
