The lay of the land

Brunswick is the county seat of Glynn County and the mainland hub of the Golden Isles, right on I-95 about an hour from both Savannah and Jacksonville. FLETC/Glynco is on the northwest edge of town, just off Exit 38, so where you live is largely a question of how you want your commute and lifestyle to feel.

Where people live (and the trade-offs)

• Mainland Brunswick — the most affordable, closest to everyday errands, and generally the shortest commute to Glynco. Includes the historic Old Town district and newer subdivisions on the north/west side near the Center.
• St. Simons Island — the premium choice: beaches and a walkable village, but higher home prices and a longer daily commute (you cross a causeway). Island life for those who don't mind paying for it.
• Country Club / north Glynn County areas — suburban, family-oriented, convenient to the Center; a common middle ground.
• Surrounding Glynn County / nearby towns — more space for the money if you don't mind a slightly longer drive.

Commute reality: Brunswick is car-dependent — public transit is minimal, so plan on driving. The upside is that traffic here is mild by big-city standards, and most commutes to Glynco are short.

Cost of living

The general picture: Brunswick's cost of living tends to run at or modestly below the U.S. average, and noticeably cheaper than the island or big metros — one of the real draws of the mainland.
